Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised as an sole daughter by her grandmother. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two positions. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. She was unable to fulfill this dream when, after completing three years of study and working as a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. A poet by trade, she began performing in poetry performances live. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. The singer performed at the Roots concert. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. During the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
